What is a Hypnosis Session Like?
I am often asked what is a hypnosis session like in our office at Arizona Family Hypnosis. My first goal is to help you to feel comfortable and safe sharing your information and goals with me. To do that we sit down and talk about what is going on in your life and what you would like to change. We focus on the positive gains and goals you want to target. Then I explain how hypnosis might be able to help you and give you an outline of how many sessions it would take to help you, the cost and frequency of visits.
Wait-I don’t think I was hypnotized
“People who are hypnotized for the first time are frequently disappointed to find that they experience nothing overwhelming. They feel mildly relaxed but they remain in touch with reality and in control of their thoughts. They may discover that they can resist the hypnotist’s suggestions. Contrary to what most people believe, a person under hypnosis need not fall asleep, or lose contact with his surroundings, or relinquish his will. He is often able to recall everything that happened during the trance and will act perfectly normal.”
Because you will hear what is going on and you will be aware of your own “self-talk” you may think that you weren’t hypnotized. On the contrary chances are you definitely were hypnotized, unless you came in to prove that you couldn’t be hypnotized. You go in and out of a state similar to hypnosis many times during the day. So you are already really good at it. Now you are making the choice to use hypnosis to make positive change easier for you.
It is extremely rare that a person will experience total amnesia or total unconsciousness that the media has mistakenly led the public to believe. Even if you felt that your hypnosis was light and ineffective, the suggestions given in most causes will cause a positive influence.
It is normal to hear noises around you, your own voice as well as the conversations you have with me while in hypnosis. You will likely not notice the choices for change you made when coming out of hypnosis but your subconscious mind has been affected by the suggestions and directions.
Once you decide to have a hypnosis session with Sandi Graves, BCH at Arizona Family Hypnosis you will find it relaxing, uplifting and comfortable to begin making your change. There is an inviting reclining chair, a loveseat and a large armchair for you to get comfortable on and blankets to cover up with, if you desire. Your sessions are private and include only you and myself. We will have a short discussion and then the lights will be dimmed and a “sound machine” will begin playing soothing sounds from nature. Once the hypnosis session begins it just takes a couple of minutes for you to get comfortable enough during this first session to begin to relax. You will be asked to focus on a designated spot in the room and be directed to follow a few simple directions.
I often tell my clients that hypnosis could be a “focused state of concentration” so once you find yourself able to focus your attention on the directions you receive from me, the process of hypnosis has begun. Even now you may still be wondering what is a hypnosis session like and asking yourself if you are hypnotized.
Most people hear and are aware of everything that is said and going on in the room. It is in this focused state that you find yourself listening very carefully or even feeling so secure that your mind feels so safe that it begins to wander. Yet, you will be able to respond to all of the suggestions.
Physically, you may experience many physical sensations and everyone has their own unique experience. Some claim to feel disoriented, both is time and space, tingling, heaviness, lightness, numbness, tingling, fluttering eyes and eyelids,
Every hypnosis session has 3 parts.
- Induction (relaxation)
- Therapeutic component
Follow up hypnosis visits
Now that you have experienced a successful hypnosis session you will find that you might become even more relaxed on your follow-up visits, and you may even find that you drift off to sleep. Yet, it is not your typical sleep. If you heard your name you would move up in awareness and you could even open your eyes if you wanted to, but you feel as though you just don’t want to, so you don’t. And then you drift even further into a blissful state of mind.
Depending upon your issues and your personal progress the subsequent sessions will vary in content but the three main components remain the same (Induction, therapeutic and awakening).
I have found in my Arizona hypnotherapy practice, Arizona Family Hypnosis, that many of my clients report that in addition to helping them with the problem they came in with, they also were able to gain confidence, self-esteem and reduce stress with hypnosis.
